What does fashion model mean? In general meaning, this is a model who can showcase clothes, shoes or accessories. Fashion photo shoots like editorial (we are not talking about look book shoots now) suppose a lot of posing, poses should not be natural, furthermore, posing and face should have a strong expression.
Editorial or haute couture kind of photo shoot can request some background idea or a story, because such publications are memorable and people pay much attention. A model should have some actress flair, she should be able to give different images and face expressions. It should be a model corresponding accepted fashion standard, like young looking face, small size of dress and she should be rather tall. This kind of shoots are used for magazines, image photography, for printed and online advertising. But what is really important is a uniqueness, creativity. Karl Lagerfeld said: “The secret to modeling is not being perfect. What one needs is a face that people can identify in a second. You have to be given what’s needed by nature and what’s needed by nature, and what’s needed is to bring something new”. The point of being a good model is whatever, in your opinion, inappropriate dress or hair style you need to showcase, you need to make it work in the best way.
Photographer’s work is very important here as well, of course, photographer needs to set up the right light and a background. The right light can give a various mood to a photography and to give the pictures some kind of magic that we like in magazines.
